Our Journey Begins

My husband and I have been talking about keeping chickens for well over a year.  After countless hours of research and discussion, today we finally took the plunge!  Both Tractor Supply and Farm and Fleet were only selling broilers (birds used for their meat), so we found a local farmer named Travis on bestfarmbuys.com who was selling one week old, straight run, brown egg laying chicks.  After a quick phone call, Travis gave us directions to his farm, we loaded the kids and an old metal bin into the car and off we went to get our chicks!  I was a little nervous on the drive up because I had no idea what I was in for.  I had never known anyone who had raised a chicken and I even after all of my reading I really had no clue how to raise chickens, but if there was on thing I did know, it was how much people seemed to love it and I hoped that I someday would share the same love.  It was very cold and windy today so when we arrived at the farm we made the transaction as quickly as possible.  Travis brought the chicks out in a small tupperware bin and Kevin scooped up eight of the little guys as quickly as he could, put them in the back of the car and that fast......we were officially, chicken owners!
