With spring now less than a week away, chicks are speedily making their way into thousands of homes across America. These fuzzy and adorable new additions will be turning some folks into first time chicken owners and we remember all too well the excitement and planning that comes in the weeks following their homecoming. We know it's hard to imagine now, but your chickens are going to quadruple in size over the next few months. That brooder box they're in now that fits ever so nicely in the corner of your living room floor? Well, it wont be long before they begin planning their great escape, standing on top of their dishes and leaping over the edge into freedom. Before you know it your chicks will need a bigger and more permanent home.
Our advice to you. Your chicken coop can be as simple or as fancy as you would like to make it. And lets face it, your chickens aren't going to care what it looks like so long as it's clean, dry and safe. But you? You probably will. When you are planning and building your chicken coop, keep in mind that your coop can be a rather large structure and in our case like a shed or a garage, an extension of our home. Building your own coop CAN be costly and is time consuming, so take great care in the planning of it.
