One thing I wish I knew before I got chickens was how fun and easy they are ( and just about everything else). We are just now starting out with chickens ,so still needing to learn a lot more . But my family is very much enjoying it ! Mary L
ReplyDeleteMary I agree!! We were really hung up with all of the details in the beginning and it was almost discouraging. When we finally decided to just do it, I was shocked by how easy it was and is!!
DeleteBefore I got my original chickens, I wish I'd known how many chicken breeds there were! I mean I had sold my first two flocks because they were all the same, and mostly layers. Now I have perfect flock and all sorts of breeds and I now breed and exhibit them too!

DeleteI wish I would have known to build a larger coop. My coop is 12' by 14' plus a 20' by 12' run...and it is NOT big enough. Chickens seem to multiply...LOL

DeleteI wish I had known that raising chickens involves blood, sweat and tears. We laughed and cried so hard over our first chickens and we loved it all so much we've done it again and again. I love raising chickens and wouldn't have it any other way. :)

DeleteI wish I knew that my dog can free range w/ the chickens without getting into trouble. It's great to be able to allow them to roam the yard together.

DeleteI wish I could have one of every breed of chickens there are. Chickens are so curious and have such a personality. Turkens are becoming one of my favorites. Love your site - seeing the pictures and reading up, I always learn something new. Glad I came across your page.

DeleteI wish we knew more about building a coop. Ours does just fine for now, but we would have liked to have gotten something a little bigger and easier to get in and out of (for us, the chickens love their home.) After doing more research, we are going to build a bigger coop with a bigger run area as well.
ReplyDeleteI wish I would have believed that they would all want on the highest perch. I read it, but I still built a ladder-style roost. It is entertaining to watch them contend for the highest perch, but they really crowd themselves to all get on it!

ReplyDeleteWe are fairly new into our chicken journey so we have plenty to learn still! However one thing that kept us from agreeing with our eldest daughter (who was the catalyst in all of this) was our perception that it would be too much work and we didn't recognize all the pleasure that comes from having them around the house!

ReplyDeleteI feel like I can't get enough information and I'm trying to be the best Momma for my chicks, so, I can't get enough. I thought I read everything there is and then I find another book, website, blog, etc. I also wish I knew how addicting these littl things can be! I want to have 2 of each breed! lol. I'm so happy my 4yo daughter is loving every minute of this adventure too!

The main thing for me with chickens is if I'd known how much fun it was raising them, I'd had them sooner! Never a day goes by that I've not enjoyed being around them and watching their fun little antics!
ReplyDeleteIf you had asked me even a year ago if I would have chickens, I would have screamed NO WAY! A few friends got them and I kept up with their stories and posts about raising them and how their kids did with them. Now I would have 30 if I could, but we have to stick with 8. What I know that I wish I knew and still really don't know... how to introduce babies or younger chickens to a group of adults. I have two 5 month olds that get pecked and picked on if I put them in with the adults. One got pecked in the eye and now has a problem with that eye. They run for their lives whenever they are all together. I am not sure how to make that transition easier and less painful for them and for me to watch.

DeleteI did a lot of research before getting chickens! Nevertheless, it would have been nice to know more about hatching your own baby chicks. We just had a POLISH who hatched 3 babies and it was a great experience, although something I never looked into until later.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what everyone has said, all of that has crossed my mine mind at one time or another. But the biggest thing that stuck out with me after getting my first flock, is their personality. I couldnt believe what great personalities they have. I mean I was amazed by how they acted. Getting my second set of chicks this year confirmed it even more. Totally different personality and totally unique to each bird. And Roosters! I was more than a little nervous around roosters after being attacked by one a several years ago. But the ones I raised were so sweet and funny! I swear they have a little chuckle.
ReplyDeleteIf I had known just how little "effort" was required to keep chickens, I would likely have started years ago. It's been a little over one year and the actual work required has really proved to be no big deal and the rewards are many. I love the fresh eggs and our day-care and foster kids have truly enjoyed helping with them.
ReplyDeleteI wish that I known the diffrence in the breeds like some are for meat and some are for eggs and some are better then others. I also a litle before getting chickens just learned hens ley eggs with no rooster!
ReplyDeleteI wish I had known more about diseases and preventing them, I had assumed no one who is good at chicken raising would allow their chicken to get sick. I wish I had known more about them and that some things just can't be stopped, that it wouldn't be my fault if I lost one.
ReplyDeleteI wish I had known how much fun and rewarding having chickens could be. I knew it would be a lot of work, but it's so rewarding it seems like barely any work at all! Taking care of the chickens is my "ME time," I wish I had started years ago! I also wish I knew how to introduce one of my dogs to my flock. The one time I tried she went into hunt mode after them so I haven't tried since.

ReplyDeleteI wish I would have known how big of a coop they need. Their's is ok. But when you looked at a lot of them that were available, they looked much bigger than what they actually were in person. We're moving to the country (hopefully soon) and they get a much bigger one.
