DIY "Scentsy" Bars

A few months back my husband's aunt turned me on to Scentsy, a candle warming system that claims to "never release the harmful chemicals that you can find in regular jarred candles."  I have really enjoyed using the Scentsy warmer but had one dilemma:  I couldn't smell the scents before buying them.  I'm sure I could have found a Scentsy rep closer or could have asked her to send me samples, but I am really hung up on a few scents over at Bath and Body Works and some that I found over at www.jbcandles.etsy.com, a small company that  hand pours their candles and uses American grown soy beans and cotton wicks.  I really wanted to see if I could make my own "Scentsy" bars,  so I waited until Bath and Body Works had their 2 for $20 sale and started my experiment!  I used an old candle to start with in case the it was a FAIL but I'm happy to report that this was a huge success!
Here is what I did:

Place the candle of your choice in a double boiler and heat on LOW heat. This might take awhile so be patient.

Once the wax has melted, carefully remove the candle with an oven mitt, the glass may be hot.

The cost of what I did:

Candles: (2) 14.5oz for $20.00 at Bath and Body Works = $24.43 (includes shipping, tax, and coupon code)

Scentsy Bars: (1) 2.6oz package for $5.00

2 candles = approx. 11 packages of Scentsy Bars

    4. I buy the $3 candles from Wal-mart and cut them & use the chunks of wax. I don't even bother with melting & re-cubing. Been doing it for YEARS. I even stock up on candles when the go on clearance.

  2. I have tried this with many types of candles and the end results to every one is the wax does not fully melt and the scent is not as strong. I still prefer the real Scentsy bars. Just buy the large bar for $20 and cut each cube into 4 pieces. It will last u longer and it less work.

    1. I absolutely agree with you. The problem with Scentsy bars or anything you will reburn is that the scent disappears with the first burn/reheating/stovetop experiment. If you order Scentsy in the summer, you might as well eat $5 (if it's mailed to you from ebay). The scent melts and even if it doesn't, its exposed to heat and that's going to be a very happy day for the mailmen who deliver it but you get about an hour out of it at home. Same concept here. It's a great idea -- but just burn the candle. Especially those BBW ones. They smell very strong.

    2. And I'm not a Scentsy rep. I actually use the Better Homes and Gardens stuff from Wally World. Unless I find a Scent I can't live without. But for the most part, its the BH&G stuff. Just saying what will happen if you burn a candle out of its smell. FWIW, I repinned this. I think its a good idea, especially if you find a strong smelling candle at a discount.

    4. If you are having issues with Scentsy bars melting in the mail it is because you are buying them on eBay. Scentsy sends all bars in insulated bags with ice packs when mailing to customers and consultants during the summer months.

    5. I bought 3 bars from Scentsy and they all melted. I had to take pictures but they replaced all 3 of them.

  3. My problem with Scentsy - which for the most part I love - are some of the scents are too strong when heated. Went to Hobby Lobby and got some unscented wax granules. Added them to what was already melted in my Scentsy container (had only put in one cube) and they melted like a charm and cut down on the scent. I plan to do this with more of the scents I like that are too strong when melted. Plus makes the product last much longer!

    1. You can also add a little of the Scentsy bar Sugar to scents that are overwhelming. It calms them down...

    2. Im a scentsy consultent and there is an easy fix to the scents being to strong, all you do it put half of what you normaly would into the wamer and bam! the scent is not as strong. There are so many tricks and ways to enjoy scents even when they melt to strong. and becarful with cheap store scents they can ruin your warmers.

      Delete
    3. I agree with the consultant above...i'm also a Scentsy consultant and i'm not going to lie but tried all of the knock off brands and they don't last as long or don't melt all the way. There are plenty of scents you can mix that will take the strong smelling scents and knock them down a notch so they aren't as strong.

      Delete
    4. "Partylite" also has scents - I'm a scentsy girl, hands down, but partylite has some much more "calm" scents & they are cheaper :) I also only use half in my plug-ins, and half if the scent is strong in my warmer.

      Delete
    5. I prefer the PartyLite warmers as they don't get as hot as the scentsy ones. Much safer, especially with kids around.

    6. I love Scentsy but its too expensive for what its worth. I burn candles and my scentsy burners alot but I buy the scents from Walmart because they last longer. But for u candle fans gold canyon candles r my face!

    7. I don't think Scentsy warmers get hot. They get warm, but not hot enough to burn little fingers. I am a Scentsy consultant and if you are getting melted Scentsy bars in the summer, you aren't ordering them from Scentsy because Scentsy packages all bars with ice packs and puts them in a thermal bag for shipping. I have never received melted bars in the summer, not even when it was 110 degrees outside.

  4. Question: how does taking the wax out of the normal candle holder reduce the amount of harmful chemicals released?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It doesn't. The wax that Scentsy makes is essentially the perfect wax. It is made from a food grade paraffin and Scentsy warmers come with a lifetime warranty. Using anything other than Scentsy will void your warranty. Many people have tried to "make their own Scentsy" however it is really not possible. Their product is made with the highest quality products, it it even considered safe if eaten by mistake (a child or pet for example) It is always more cost effective to use the Scentsy products, and if you find it is too strong for you then add another scent to it or even the new pink pepper to lighten the scent. These products are even safe for people with allergies and migraines. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me anytime at www.heathercharron.scentsy.ca, I am a consultant and would be more than happy to get you the best deal possible and address any questions or concerns you may have. Good luck! ♥

    2. Nikkisgirl we appreciate your contribution and wish you great success. There are "other" warmers on the market as well as "other" brands of candle that are non toxic and can also be eaten (YUCK). Beeswax comes to mind. *Cheers

      Delete
    3. Not to burst your bubble, but the wax used by scentsy is just as harmful as most paraffin candles and tarts. The best option is either beeswax or soy. They are the only non-toxic candles/tarts available.

      Delete
    4. I am a scentsy consultant and the wax that comes from the bars actually cuts down on the bad fumes distributed through out the air.. if you burn one candle in your home and blow it out it is like smoking 30 cigarettes in your house at once.

      Delete
    5. I am also a Scentsy Consultant and Samika Scentsy wax is not harmful they are just as safe as the beeswax or soy... Just to warn you all, The Scentsy wax is the only wax that should be used in a scentsy warmer. If something were to happen to the warmer you would be able to send it back and get a replacement. Just wanted to give you all a heads up.

      Delete
    6. Right. Like my warmer that the top cracked on...and I called to get it replaced and they said no such luck. They don't replace them, just tell you they do!

      Delete
    7. The problem isn't necessarily the wax... it's the actual burning of the candle and it's wick...

      Delete
    8. True, it's not necessarily the wax, but it's also not just burning or the wick that is harmful. It's the fragrance. Most candle companies, wickless included, use chemical fragrance oils. Whether burned or melted in a warmer, it's the chemicals from the fragrance oil that is released in the air and is just as harmful. I used to own a wickless candle company and had to close because I developed pneumonia several times from breathing the fragrance oils too much. The only truly safe candle product is made from a natural based wax like soy, palm or beeswax AND only scented with natural essential oils. Problem is, essential oils have a very faint scent throw and are costly which is why nearly all candle companies, including Scentsy, use chemical based fragrances. Everyone is so focused on the wax that they don't even think about this!!

    9. @Anonymous from September 24th: SCENTSY does replace tops to the warmers. Depending on the age of the warmer, it is fairly easy for a consultant to order a top, as long as they know what they are doing and are not just trying to get you to buy a new warmer. my mother is a consultant and I helped her get started. We have ordered tops for friends and who have broken them and have no problem doing so. They are ordered online from the consultant website, not found in the catalog. Unfortunately, if your warmer is several years old and discontinued it may no longer be produced.

    10. Leeesa is correct. It is a combo of all the ingredients including the oils that can contribute to toxic fumes being thrown off by the candle. I actually personally know the owners, candle maker of JBCandles, aka JBAM Candles (the one mentioned by the author) and they only use soy wax and cotton wicks in their candles. Most of their candles and products are made with essential oils with the exception of a few scents which she can't get e/o for. Check out their actual website http://www.jbamcandles.com/ to place an order. They have info on how and why they got started.

  5. If you find the Scentsy scent your using to strong, cut the cube in 1/2, there also scents which are not as strong as others. The scentsy wax is a low melting wax to release the scent, candle wax is supposed to burn away releasing those chemicals.
You also can mix your Scentsy scents to tone down or create your own favorite scent.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I have seen that non-Scensty wax loses it's scent way too fast to make this with it. I would have to use twice as much wax to get the same fragrance time. That is not a cost savings.

    3. The plastic trays that the Scentsy bars come in are recyclable! :) If you buy from a consultant who has great customer service, you can oftentimes ask if they have a frequent buyer program. The 6 pack of scents for $25 should last you quite a while! Especially if the scent is too strong, just cut it in half and pop it in your warmer. I love the fact that the Scentsy warmer is not going to burn my house down or burn my kids' fingers if they accidentally touch the wax. Those store-bought brands have been known to do both of those things and I don't want to take a chance with my precious babies. Good luck if you are going to try and "make" your Scents!

  7. I haven't tried this but I have tried waxes other than scentsy. And I have to agree that nothing works as good as the scentsy bars. I've also thought maybe it's because I need to buy a warmer that isn't a scentsy warmer. The scentsy bars are so strong they actually GIVE me the migraines. And they cost so much!! They are a good product if you find your happy medium. I have to say though that it was very inappropriate for all the scentsy people to come on here and attack this person for trying to save herself some money. I don't blame her. We all have. Because your products cost SO MUCH MONEY!! This worked for her so leave her alone and get over it. I highly doubt that this one post is going to hurt your business more than the high cost of your product already has.

    6. If you think about Scentsy saves you money. I mean up front you pay a little more but in the end you save. I used to go through a candle a week or Two @ 20 a candle... Scentsy i bought the warmer and 6 scents and it lasted a while and all i have to pay is for the bars now.. $80 a month vs. Scentsy $65 the first month then $25 every month and a half! Plus i have tried walmart warmers and their wax sucks, and the warmers get really hot and left a burn mark on my table.

    7. Someone in my office burns one, I don't even sit by her and it gives me migraines. After reading a rep above say they didn't give headaches I was thinking I must be losing my mind. I'm not glad you also get migraines Josie, but at least I'm not losing my mind! It's so strong that I find it overwhelming and normally I love a candle.

    1. Exactly... I like the character of the scentsy warmers but to me their wax sucks.. I've told the many scentsy consultant friends i have that id rather burn the candle just because after one use, the scent is gone from the wax. But whether you agree or not, stop attacking her for trying to help those of us who are looking to save money any way we can so that we can have small luxuries and still fully attend to our responsibilities. Making your own scentsy is not a controversial issue. My goodness. You would think that she had brought up politics for crying out loud. I personally appreciate your post. Very helpful.

      Delete
    2. Your wax would last longer if you just turned the burner on long enough to melt the wax and then turned it off. You can do this a few times before the scent is gone. Especially with the stronger scents.

      Delete
    3. Isn't the whole point of having a scentsy warmer is to leave plugged in or on? lol :) You shouldn't have to unplug it for scents to last longer. For what you pay for scentsy I totally agree that the scent should last much longer than it does. The cost of scentsy is outragious and the quality of the product doesnt match up. I personally think that the Scentsy reps sound ridiculous on here! Seriously people? I love the latest....your scentsy warmer will not work as well if you burn other than scentsy wax..bahaha!

  9. Ive put my scentsy wax in the microwave when making samples and put the remaining wax back into the same tray you did and it caused the tray to kinda melt and become disfigured (shrink or shribble up) I can imagine this way the wax will get as warm or warmer then mine so be safe when doing the scentsy tray. It can burn you f you try to pick it up. And if your able to actually pick it up put it in the fridge or freeze to trap the scent. Im also conaultant but im not going to try and sell you scentsy or bash your idea. For some ppl it may work for others it may not but whatever you do dont let pplbelieve your wax is scentsys. :) s.

  10. I wouldn't call them "Scentsy" Bars if they're not actually Scentsy-- it's misleading. Before I tried Scentsy, I tried some of the bars at Michael's, and THOSE were the ones that gave me headaches and were too strong, and then didn't last long. Scentsy is actually a really good deal. I like Bath and Body Works as much as anyone, but I'm going with Scentsy all the way for the safety and cost-effective factor. One warmer for $20-30, and then a $5 bar that lasts up to 80 hours is a much better deal, and better for the environment all-around, as you can recycle/reuse the Scentsy clamshells. What are you going to do with a used-up candle jar?

    4. You can get a warmer for $15 at WalMart and wax cubes for $2 per container, 6 cubes per container, 8 hours per cube (estimated), 48 hours per container. If you spend 4 bucks on two containers that's 96 hours of scent. Cheaper AND more burn time than Scentsy. And if you want to refill them with whatever other wax you feel like then God bless you, have fun. It's a swell idea and I plan to try it out (especially with a curious toddler in the house--burning candles can be dangerous!!!). :)

    5. i think the scentsy reps are commenting so much on this post because of the title saying your making your own scentsy bars is misleading .....this causes problems for us reps when our clients try this and then cant get their burners replaced because of it.

i being a scentsy rerp dont care if you like scentsy , walmart brand or bath and body ....if it makes you happy go for it ....

i just really feel like if you named it something other than scentsy wax you wouldnt have had all thes reps posting about it.

i didnt care to be honest until i saw all the posts about the "big evil Scentsy reps" lol ... just remember this is our way of keeping a roof over our head and some people are passionate about working for scentsy.

in the end what works for you is all that matters and im glad this method works for you! i enjoyed your article , i would just suggest a different name next time so my fellow scensty reps dont feel the need to correct you or push info on you.

  18. Wow... be more rude people. If you dont like the fact that she has found a way to make a cheaper version of what you sell... then dont sell it to her. Good grief. When did Scentsy become some controversial topic to argue about. I think her idea was great, not original or rocket science but none the less... a great idea. I would rather do this than buy scentsy. It may not last as long (as I have noticed) but who cares, I just want my darn house to smell good. I get to pick and choose at my own convince what scent I use in my house. I dont have to wait for a rep or hunt one down like I did on the east coast. I can smell it before I buy it without having to bother anyone or feel obligated to buy more. A trick I use is a ice cube tray or a small flexible baking tray. It is a great way to use up old candles and you can reuse the container for make up brushes, q-tips, cotton balls... the list is endless. As a blogging peer... I respectfully say... if you dont have anything nice to say ... dont say anything at all. And if you cant help yourself from saying rude things... do it on your own darn wall/blog/pin. Geeze.

  20. I found a 22-oz candle that I liked at a thrift store that had been burned down to where the wick was buried in the wax. Since I only had one small Scentsy tray empty, I poured the melted wax into a glass pie plate and scored it with a butter knife as it cooled. It broke apart into chunks nicely. $4 and a bit of time, and I've got 2 zippered sandwich bags full of wax cubes.

Haven't tried melting them yet, so I don't know how well it will work, but I suspect that doing it this way will be an infrequent thing for me. I like the texture of the Scentsy wax, and I like having a variety of different scents to switch between -- making a lot of different scents this way would be a royal pain in the neck. Great for when you find a good buy like I did, or if there's a scent you REALLY want that they don't carry, but otherwise I'll probably continue to buy the Scentsy brand stuff.

    1. As someone who started making soy candles, this technique of melting the candles into melts or tarts will work, as long as you make sure your candle does not get too hot. It can burn the scent out of the wax. If you are melting all soy, usually the wax will melt at 125F. Not sure about paraffin or even soy/paraffin blends....

also, those small cubes are not designed to last forever in the warmers. The ones I make usually last 8-10 hours before the scent is gone.

  21. This works really well with woodwick candles, I usually use what is left in the bottom of the jar. You can even skip melting it first, their wax is so pliable you can "scoop" it out of the jar and put it in the warmer! Thanks for the tips!

  22. What I think everyone needs to remember here, is that everyone (consultant or not) has their own opinions, likes, and dislikes. Some people like Scentsy more, doesn't give them headaches... others like "other bars" no headaches, some believe Scentsy is expensive, others have no qualms for quality vs quantity... I like ketchup, you may like mustard (ick!) But in the end, NO ONEs' belief is right vs wrong. Everyone needs to keep an open mind, and not get argumentative just because YOUR experience went one way. You are only one person. While your opinion matters, it's not the ONLY one that matters. Lets all agree we love scented wax and warmers, no arguments there :)

  23. I think this is a wonderful idea!! But i do know that Scentsy warmers might not get hot enough to properly melt most candle wax so if you're planning on trying this and own a Scentsy warmer i would advise buying the BH&G warmer because they get a lot hotter then the Scentsy warmers. Only downside is the BH&G warmers are not ment to be left on for longer then 2 hours at a time so please remember to turn it off when you leave home or go to sleep. :-)

    1. BHG burners from Wally World use exactly the same light bulb as the Scentsy burners, 25 Watt. I have one of each (Scentsy & BHG) and I have purchased replacement bulbs for them both.
Scentsy wax has a lower melting point than most regular candles. (Party Lite candles also have a lower melting point.) Wax can be formulated to melt at different temperatures by adding other ingredients. That's why there are cheap candles and expensive candles, it's all about what's added to the wax.
If you asked a fireman, he would tell you to not leave on Scentsy OR BHG warmers when you are not at home, as anything like that could be a potential fire hazard.

    2. My mother is a consultant, and we both Love SCENTSY. My mom loved candles and always seemed to keep them burning everywhere, very unsafe. We once had a gel candle in the bathroom explode and blacken the wall. Dad got tired of it and hinted to mom that she should join SCENTSY as a consultant, and she Did! :) The warmers are much safer to be left on than a flame candle. However it is still a good idea to turn them off at night, it also helps the wax last longer. I found a special plug timer at IKEA(I think i found it there..). It is a rectangle plug that you plug any electronic into and you can set the dial to any time you want. I set ours to turn on in the morning and evening and turn off at night. It very much Saved dad from a few burnt gray hairs. LoL... ;)

  24. Not to take away from the Scentsy reps here, but they sell Scentsy-like wax bars at Walmart and Big Lots for a fraction of the cost. I believe Walmart sells them for $2 and Big Lots sells bigger bars for $3. The Big Lots ones don't last as long as a Scentsy though.

    1. I personally have used both. I have also had both spilled (thanks to my lovely kids). To try to clean up the wax from the Walmart or "Bargain" bars is no picnic however the scentsy wax is very easy to clean for this reason alone, I will only use Scentsy.

  25. You don't have to melt the candle. Just cut or break it into pieces, and add the pieces to the warmer. They don't have to be in cute little shapes...they are going to melt, anyway.

  26. Thanks for the idea! Do you know if you could "customize" a scent by using unscented wax and essential oils? I think that could be nice too. Also, I had a ton of partylite votives that I wasn't burning. So since you can just pull the wick directly out of it, I have just popped those in my burner. No candles just lying around. And scents I liked but hadn't smelled in awhile. I look forward to trying this now!

For those of you that sell Scentsy or any other product....kudos to you. I wish you well and hope you achieve all that you aspire through it. However....this is NOT YOUR blog, nor is it YOUR space for peddling your products & frankly I find it in very poor taste that you are using someone else's blog to do so. Some people LOVE it, others don't & that's ok-what isn't ok is bashing anyone for simply trying to save money. Let's face it, we all need to cut back & if it works for you & cost less then that's an awesome alternative!! It makes me sad to see anyone being lashed out at for thinking differently. I think it is a great idea for it's intended purpose, and if you are pleased with the results then job well done! That said-just one word of caution, our Scentsy warmers are lifetime replacement for defects-UNLESS you use other brands of wax than our intended Scentsy wax. That is the only downfall I see to making up your own bars-you void the warranty. Other than that, great blog!

LOL ill stick with original candles any day but i love this idea and definitely will be trying it.

  36. I am a Scentsy consultant and love this article. There are 2 candles from Bath & Body that I have to have this time of year and its the Hot Chocolate and Marshmallow one. I haven't tried this idea yet, but I can give you a tip on making your Scentsy fragrance last longer. After you melt one scent for so long your nose gets used to it. Your house still smells but not to you. If someone was walking in the door they would smell it. Its just like a candle, you don't burn it all day long. What I do is put my Scentsy warmers on christmas light timers so they come on for 3 hours in the morning and then 3 hours in the evening. They are on 1 hour before I wake up so the whole house smells first thing. Then after dinner they come back on to cover up what I cooked. I also do this in my bedroom with 2 warmers and 2 different scents so they alternate and you don't get used to one scent. Try this and let me know what you think.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Another suggestion - and this is what I thought I might find when I read your post - you can get the high-quality unscented wax from a craft store and use essential oils as scents. If the soy wax melts at a lower temp, then that would be best for this use because you're not burning it as in a candle, but only melting it.

OK, I understand that if you burn non-Scentsy brand products in their warmers, it voids their warranty if anything happens to the warmer. But realistically, what is going to happen. It's wax. In a ceramic dish. Over an incandescent light bulb.

  38. Hi,

I decided to try this because I love BBW scents but there is only one problem I am allergic to the smoke put out by candles. I melted tonight one of my old bbw candles. At first I poured the melted wax directly into an old scentsy container and it melted the plastic. I waited about ten minutes more and filled two containers and it worked. I haven't tried it in my scentsy warmer yet to see how the wax actually melts and if I can smell the scent. I would think that BBW would use a higher quality wax so I am expecting good results.

I am thrilled to find this post and I plan on trying this on a few more BBW candles. I found some of the other posts helpful as well. I like the idea of putting the wax in the refrigerator to seal in the smell. I wonder if that would really work? I love scentsy too and will buy their scents too and continue using this idea on my BBW candles provided the wax does melt and I can at least smell the scent good for a whole day. Great post thanks for sharing! :)

  40. Scentsy has some nice smells. But they are gone after one day tops. Try Pink Zebra Home fragrances. They beat any fragrances out on the market hands down. 42. i have had my own candle company for over 20 yrs, when i seen this,, it made me want to really comment,, first its an ideal, but,,, some wax are differ in temps of melting, so make sure you do your homework on what the heat max is, also, some jars arent made to be heated on a double boiler much less on a candle heat warmer... it may be a cheaper way, but in the long run, you could catch fire,, and you could have a bigger mess of broken jar glass..... you can contact scentsy to find a rep in your area,, to be alot safer. and,, yes they do carry samples you can smell ur scents before you buy.

I save leftover tarts in ziploc baggies and I decided I'm going to buy candle fragrance to drop onto them when they remelt and keep reusing them and/or possibly drop in scented wax from other candles to mix and match colors and fragrances. I may also use some to make fire starters. :) MG

I was lied to and the consultants themselves are lied to continuously. Also, fragrances that are not all natural and made Chemically are all terrible for your body! Wise up. It has nothing to do with the wax. Its the oil used to make the scents that will poison your body over time. Let’s green up people! Stop introducing more and more chemicals to you and your children’s bodies. Chronic illness and disease is running rampant in our time here and most of the time with no apparent cause. 57. I love all scented things. I keep a Ziplock bag with chunks of old scented candles. Break off a piece of this and that...mix and match and add them to the pot. What pot? I have a tiny crock pot that holds about a half liter of whatever you put in it. Insert chunks, plug in on top of something high with the cord behind it (fridge works really well as does a chest of drawers and kids can't reach behind to pull cords) and you have great smells all day long. Still, don't forget to turn it off. It has a little rotating switch on the cord. The scent actually lingers forever to me. I agree with whomever mentioned that when you get used to a scent, you cannot smell it, but a person coming into your house can smell it full strength. FYI, ladies and gentlemen, this is also true of your personal cologne or perfume. Please switch often, the results of using the same scent on your body all the time is an all out assault on others when they are anywhere near you. Just sayin'...

  58. I've been a candle and scented wax melt maker with my own company for 15 years, and have spent thousands of dollars and hours educating myself about waxes, fragrances, safety, you name it. There is a lot of truth AND erroneous information in the comments here. Some of the erroneous info is from folks who make their money selling wax. I understand, though..they say what they are taught. That's neither here nor there. It's not my job to educate folks about what they sell. One big thing though. No claim should ever be made that a melted wax will not burn people. What may not burn one person just might burn another.

Just a tip: A PROPERLY made and burned candle will not leave visible black soot on the walls. Part of the onus is on the consumer to follow the burning instructions on the warning label the candle should have. You would be amazed at the blatant disregard some people have for the safety instructions! Burning a candle incorrectly, or buying one improperly made will negate any benefits of one wax over another as well. An improperly made/burned soy candle is going to be as bad for you as any other may possibly be in whatever situation.

A tip for those of you storing leftover wax bits of any kind to use in wax melt warmers: Stop storing them in Ziploc bags, for the love of all things smelly! ;) Most zip seal bags are made of polyethylene plastic. This plastic literally sucks the scent out of your wax! Store your wax bits in cellophane bags, (the crinkly, clear ones) bags that you know are made of polypropylene, OR plastic containers marked with a 5 recycling symbol. (The 5 also stands for polypropylene. Think of PROpylene as GOOD for your wax. ;) ) Your wax, pocketbook and nose will thank you. Hope everyone has a great Autumn.

I keep mine going 24-7 and haven't had any issues- thankful I don't have to remember to shut them off or "blow them out" when I leave or at bedtime. Competition is what makes each company try to out do the other in product etc. I have never heard that you won't get migranes/headaches from them- but if you like the light effect of the warmers you can just plug them in- they do not need the wax from my experience. I have a plug-in in my guest bedroom just for that reason! More power to anyone who can try to save money- we all have our things! 63. A cost saving tip I have discovered is that I bought a beverage warmer (the kind you set your cup of coffee on to keep it warm) at Goodwill for $6 and I bought a small ceramic pumpkin for 99 cents and have been using that to melt the scented wax cubes. It has been working great, I have been using it for a couple weeks and have not noticed any safety hazards with it. I also have Scentsy (given to me as a gift) and BH&G warmers and I use Scentsy, BH&G wax and have recently been making my own scented wax cubes. I've been using silicone ice cube molds that I also bought at Goodwill for only 50 cents to make the wax cubes in for giving to people I know because I like the heart shape. I also wanted to say that my homemade warmer works just as well as my real warmers and I have been finding other ceramic containers for my repurposed beverage warmer, I bought a small "Boston Baked Beans" mini crock for the beverage warmer and it is so cute in the kitchen. I'm a cheapskate I know but I love it, just be nice and not get so angry that people are trying to save a few bucks please. Thank you.

I sold Avon but I didn't talk down about other beauty products just to make people buy Avon from me. Better homes and gardens smell just as good last just as long and the burners work great. It was bad enough publicity when Jenelle from Teen Mom 2 was peddling it but this was just way too much.

  68. OK, here is a thought and btw I too am a Scentsy Consultant.

For $99.00 you can become a consultant right?

Your going to get warmers and scents, you won't get to choose but resell them and replace with bars you want.

So $99.00 - 35.00 -5.00 = $59.00 difference or extra that you pay to purchase this way. BTW your going to get your very own set of testers!

Say you buy 3 bars for $14.00 and you earn commission of $2.80 or saved that amount.

Now divide the $59.00 by 2.8 and that is equal roughly 20 orders of three bars @ $14.00.

If you sell an odd order here or there you are saving even more on YOUR Scentsy.

I think this DIY idea is very resourceful but join Scentsy, use the time that your melting and pouring into working your business. Plus if you happen to drop that hot jar of melted wax--oh my goodness :0

    Just some food for thought.

  69. I enjoyed this article and funnily enough, the comments that went with it (: My one question to the Scentsy folks is this: how is Scentsy to know that someone used an off-brand of wax in a Scentsy warmer?? What causes the warranty to be void without that info?

  70. I too have enjoyed this post, maybe even more-so the comments. I think it's funny when people get their feathers riled. Anyway, just my two cents- I have pretty bad allergies, especially to chemicals. I have tried Scentsy, and other brands, and they all give me the worst headaches. Not to mention I have a super tight budget, so even if I could, there would be no way I would choose to spend money on something I couldn't justify. I now use pure essential oils in my warmer. I just put a little coconut or almond oil with a few drops of essential oils and I love it- no headaches! I'm sure it probably doesn't last as long as a "scentsy" cube, but I love the alternative to chemicals.

  71. Hi! Just wondering where you got the tray to pour the wax into, or if it was an old scentsy tray. Thanks!

  72. I LOVE candles but do not burn them. I "scoop" some wax out of the container and put in a electric light bulb warmer & turn it on. Safe for the kid and cats and I have my favorite smells from all the different companies!

  73. anyone know if I can use a plug in wax burner/night light without anything in it...just use it as a night light? its not sentsy, a knock off brand. Some have removable tops where the wax burns... mine is attahed so it does get hot. thanks

  74. Great idea..and you know what else I saw on Pintrest (yes I buy Scentsy and BH&G too...and meijer sells them now too for $2...) anyways, use Gain fireworks, or Downy unstoppables....just a few tiny dots of them in with another wax cube that has lost it's scent already and you have laundry smelling wax burner...AWESOME

  75. I think a lot of this is pretty funny. Very opinionated ppl. Anyways whatever works for u is great. Way to think outside of the box. I personally am a scentsy person. I swear by it...and no im not a rep. But I get all of my scentsy for pretty much free. I host one large party a year and because of the sales generated from that party I get a lot of free product. Since I have enough burners for my entire house I get bars and sprays and whatever else I may want. This was the solution for me anyways. Ultimately this saves the most since its free. But again great thinking....I enjoyed reading ur post. :-)

  76. If you have wax that has lost it's smell, melt it and add an essential oil of your choice!! Ta! Da!

  77. Dear Emily and Kevin, What a brilliant idea; thank you so much for sharing! I have 4 Scentsy warmers. Unfortunately, (for economic reasons), their melts have recently become cost-prohibitive for me. Needless to say, I was anxious to put your method to the test. Well, it worked like a charm! I purchased several well-known brands of scented candles right after Christmas, (post-holiday sales, reduced 60-75%.) Thanks to your DIY instructions, I was able to re-create beautifully aromatic melts, with staying power outlasting the Scentsy's I had previously owned. (No offense intended to the company/reps.) I also plan to try some of the awesome suggestions others have kindly posted here in the comments. Again, I'm grateful you took the time and effort to provide such useful, cost-saving advice. (And I'm GLAD you included "Scentsy" in your title. I had done a search for "Scentsy" wax alternatives. Hence, your link popped up!) From a new fan and follower, DyannLynn~

  78. I got the Better Homes and Gardens wax cubes from Wal*Mart and I had one in the warmer for 12 hours and it still smells great.

Scentsy on the other hand lasts for a couple hours and then the scent is pretty much gone.

And I ordered Scentsy from Scentsy and it came all melted so don't say if its melted that it didn't come from Scentsy

  79. Wow, you know I was going to sign up to sell Scentys but um yea some of their reps are just nasty. I do not want to sign up for a company with a "team" like that. I don't think that I would even buy from them. So much for that plan. Way to go "team"

  80. I would just like to say that as a Scentsy Rep, my quote that I like to put at the end of my newsletters is this: "Saving the World From Candles With Wicks". I am against candles in general, not a brand. I have had too many friends who have had either a house burn, a child get burned, a pet get hurt or something along those lines due to candles not being blown out. I am very fortunate to have another alternative to candles since I left candles burning over a weekend. My 2 year old niece accidentally nudged the top of a warmer, and it poured over her face! Luckily the wax didn't burn her! Needless to say I have several reasons why I don't like burning candles, just wickless! So all of that to say, I am impressed she is trying to not use candle by turning her candles into wickless wax!! YAY YOU! I also would like to say, not all Scentsy reps are crabby.

  81. I think if you are used to buying more expensive scents this is a good alternative. :) I think you do probably lose some of the scent by melting it but since you are melting it quick and letting it cool I doubt you are losing that much. I don't buy scensty because I think they are too expensive. I used to work at Yankee so I will give some tips that I know that will help as well. The cheapest way to burn them is to buy votives and cut them in half...pull out the wick and metal tab and use them as tarts. You get twice as much that way. For me I won't even burn a candle unless it is 2 wick. 1 wick does practically nothing. If I find a scent I really like...I roll up the candle in newspaper and take a hammer and bust the glass on the candle. Run under COLD water to get the tiny specks of glass off. Cut up and put chunks in freezer in ziploc bag. This will make it last longer. Anyone that tells you that there is no shelf life on candles (including Yankee) is a liar. They do have a shelf life...I would say maybe about 5-10 years. With each year getting weaker. I think the Scentsy reps on here are obnoxious and they need to learn some manners. To the lady that has the headaches....YES you can get headaches...anyone that tells you otherwise is crazy themselves. I know that Yankee uses actual natural plant extracts in their wax. If you have any issues with say grass...then burning dune grass can be horrific for you. I am not here to promote Yankee because I worked there. Do I like their product? Yes...but honestly I use Better Homes and Garden more than anything else. Their stuff is almost as good as Yankee and at a fraction of the price at only $2 for their wax cubes. On another note.....I will push Yankee tea lights. Those things are awesome! I can get one to usually lasts me 6 hours. They are also self extinguishing so they are safer. I also never use plug in tart burners....only tea light tart burners. Plug ins do not get as hot which in turn do not get the wax as hot. The hotter the wax the stronger the smell. And yes if you think a scent is to strong...just cut it in half...that will take care of that. :)

  85. Personally, I think this is a fabulous idea. I love my candles from bath and body works, but I worry sometimes about falling asleep with my candles lit. Also I have a dog that likes to throw his toys in the air and he almost tipped a candle once. I would feel so much better about him spilling a little wax than a lit candle! Plus scentsy is so expensive and they don't have some of my fave fragrances from candles. And I see no reason why people are throwing a fit about the title when that's what caught my attention to begin with. If it was titled melted wax or something, i would have scrolled right past, and I think we all know you weren't trying to tick people from scentsy off either. sheesh! Kudos for the good idea!

  87. Not all direct sales people are like some of those pushier ones - sorry! We're not all like that...and I don't sell Scentsy!

I stumbled on this site looking for info on the bulbs. I have a BHG one in my office which I used soy-based bars I found at a craft/flea market. I have a ton of Scentsy at home, which I personally like.

What I've experienced is not good when you mix bars & burners from other companies: soy in the Scentsy is nasty goopy crap and Scentsy in my BHG burned off super fast.

I had considered putting a Scentsy bulb in my BHG burner to see if I can use more of what I already have in stock. Not sure if there really IS a difference but figured worth checking into.

But, I LOVE THIS IDEA & realized with all the Partylite I have buried in my basement how I can actually use it!! (I stopped burning candles when I had babies; had huge Partylite parties for years - was a consultants dream host!)

So, THANK YOU for this idea to add to my Pins! :)
